Are all Nikon lenses interchangeable?
Jul 21, 2018
Complete newbie right here. Currently using a nikon d3200. Trying to get into wildlife photography & I'm looking to buy a better lense. I want this lense to be compatible with another nikon camera if I decide to purchase one in the future. Is compatibility something I have to worry about?
Thanks

Start here :
https://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d3200/compatibility02.htm
then look this up
https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/na/NSG_article?articleNo=000026574&configured=1&lang=en_SG
short version : all lenses that work with your camera will work on all other current APS C Nikon cameras.

While that is TRUE .. but I suggest he must be careful with a lenshe currentlygets becauseNOT ALL NIKON LENSES WILL"AF" ON HIS CAMERA.
So he indeed must be "careful" what he buys.
(And I suggest he switches to a 1"-type camera for more economical "tele" options.)

Yes, but not the other way around, which is what the OP was asking. The 70-300 AF-P DX, which the OP could well be considering, is listed as not being compatible with the D3200. All current Nikon DSLR's will work with AF-P lenses but not older ones.

No, he was in fact asking about what lens that works with his current camera , the D3200 ,will also work with other Nikon cameras.
My comment was that any lens that works with his camera will also work with other current Nikon cameras .
This is what the OP wrote :

Seems pretty clear to me.

There are some lenses that are partially compatible with your camera and some that are not compatible at all.
The lenses that are AF-D or AF will not have AF on your camera and the AF-P lenses will not work at all on your camera.
So look for AF-S in the lens designation and you are all set.

I have a older D200 and my lenses won't work on my son's 5500. Even my prime lenses

You probably have AF lenses, which require a camera with a drive motor in the body. The D5500 doesn't have that. So the lenses will fit and work but they won't autofocus.

Your camera uses a way to attach lenses that is called the "F mount". That mount has been around since 1959 and all kinds of things have changed over the years. So there's a huge rabbit hole to fall into.
But the short answer was given above: look for lenses with "AF-S" in the name, with or without "DX".
AF-S lenses will also work if you at some point switch to Nikon's newer cameras that have the Z mount using the FTZ adapter.

Not all Nikon lenses fit all Nikon cameras. Many of them do, but there are exceptions to this rule. AF-P and E-Type lenses are incompatible with many Nikon cameras altogether. While some lenses fit certain cameras but have limited functionality.
For example, some lenses have broken autofocus or light metering when used with certain cameras.
