Merci Mme. Haines!

Hockey Day in CLC Having Phys Ed classes forced to beoutside has led to some creative waysto be active this winter. With the help of some students, Mr. Mamchuk and Ms. Marinelli created our own outdoor rink that has been used for hockey, broomball, curling and lots of great outdoor fun!

CLC was also able to obtain a class set of snowshoeswhich we hope to use in gym class for years to come.

History of Hockey By AlyciaWe all know the game of hockey, but do you know who invented hockey? Or when the gamewas invented? Well to answer these ponderings, here is what was found! We do not actually know whenhockey was in fact invented. Historians have investigated who invented this great sport but have no clearanswer. Ice hockey as we know it today has evolved over the course of hundreds of years. Some believe that hockey goes back over 4,000 years to ancient Egypt where a crude stick and ball game wasplayed. Evidence also exists that similar games were played by the ancient Ethiopians, Romans, Greeks, andAztecs. Historians have uncovered evidence of hockey-like games being played in England in the mid to late1700s. They found an engraving from 1797, that shows a person on skates with a stick and a cork plug (calleda "bung") on the frozen River Thames in 1796.The version we play today is often credited to James Creighton. In 1872, he moved from Halifax, Nova Scotiato Montreal, bringing skates, hockey sticks, and a game with a basic set of rules with him. In 1875, heorganized indoor hockey practices at Victoria Skating Rink. The first organized indoor game of hockey wasplayed on March 3, 1875. Their puck was a circular piece of wood created by James Creighton. The NationalHockey League (NHL) was later founded November 26, 1917, in Montreal. The first NHL teams were theMontreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and the Toronto Arenas are now known as theToronto Maple Leafs as of 1927. The oldest hockey teams that were part of what we now call the original six,are the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

History Starts With the Color Black By: Christel N.You may be asking yourself why do we celebrate Black History Month? Not everybody knows about BlackHistory Month. It is not necessarily taught in schools. This celebration is sometimes kept in the dark. Howev-er, it should be something we celebrate and learn about as it is an important part of our history. When I was in elementary, I never learned about Black History Month. I was not taught about the people whofought for their rights and their freedom of expression. I really wish that when I was in elementary school theywould have taught about, Black History Month. This celebration means so much to me, it's a way of reassur-ing that black people who risked their lives are remembered and honored from this day on.Black History Month started in 1970, it was first suggested by a group of students who attended Kent StateUniversity in February, 1969. The first annual Black History Month started the following year starting January2 to February 28th. Why the month of February? The reason is simple, it’s because two important and great people were born that month, Abraham Lincoln andFrederick Douglass. They played an important role in putting an end to slavery. You may be asking yourselfwho decided, who planned it? It's because of a man named Carter G Woodson, he was inspired when he at-tended a celebration in Illinois. Carter G Woodson, Father of black history Abraham Lincoln Fedrick Douglass Why is it important to celebrate?Black History Month is a celebration in honour of those who have impacted, not just the country, but also theworld with what they have accomplished and done throughout history. There are many people who have hadan impact in this celebration one of whom is Rosa Parks.Rosa Parks is a person that should be remembered when celebrating Black History. She refused to give up herseat to a white man on a bus in 1955. Her actions inspired a group of local black leaders to organize the Mont-gomery Bus Boycott, which was led by Martin Luther King. She has been remembered for her courage, herbravery and strength in the struggle to end racial segregation.Rosa Parks How can you help? How do we continue spreading the word? That's a good question. We all have a part to play in educating oth-ers about the importance of Black History Month. Even though we know that challenges still exists, we mustcontinue to keep changing the world to make it a better place for everyone. We have come so far, we want thisgrowth to continue to make our society even better! Remember those who strove for this day to come! Tellthose who don't know the stories because we know that history starts with the color black.
