Making backups in GBWhatsApp and restoring them later isn’t at all complicated although you’ll need to make use of a few tools. Despite being a WhatsApp MOD that works almost identically to the original client, WhatsApp’s restrictions towards these MODs don’t allow this function to work 100%.
First things first. What exactly do you want to do? There are three possibilities:
- Make a GBWhatsApp backup and restore it in the same app, whether on the same phone or a new phone.
- Make a GBWhatsApp backup and restore it in the original WhatsApp Messenger.
- Make an official WhatsApp backup and restore it in GBWhatsApp.
Depending on your circ*mstances, you’ll have to do one thing or another. What you must know is that at present the functions to create a backup and store it in Google Drive aren’t available. Google restricts the access to this function on behalf of modded versions of the messaging app.
How to back up GBWhatsApp y restore it in the same app
In the first place, we’ll explain how to create a backup and import it later into the same MOD.
How to create the backup
If you use GBWhatsApp and you want to create a backup, open the app and to go the Chats tab. Press the icon of the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the interface and select Settings at the bottom of the menu.

Confirm the operation by pressing the Back Up button. Once competed you’ll see at the top of the screen the time at which it was completed.

Different folders and files will have been created in GBWhatsApp’s local directory on the phone’s internal memory. The backup has been created, the next thing to do is copy it to a safe location. How?
To be able to access those files on the internal storage, you’ll need an advanced file explorer. ES File Explorer could be a good option, download it and install it on your phone.
Open the app and press Internal Storage on the upper part of the interface which will grant you access to all the file stored internally on your device.

Amongst all the folders available, you’ll see one called GBWhatsApp. This folder is created when you install the app and its content is updated according to your activity in the app, for instance, when you generate a backup. Keep the folder pressed for a few seconds. This action will open an options menu that includes a Copy function.

You now need to copy that backup to a safe and accessible location. There are several ways of doing so. For instance, you can copy it to your download folder, connect your device to a PC and access the folder with your Windows Explorer to copy the files to an external hard drive. Another possibility is to use the More option instead of copying the file. In this menu, you’ll find several options that allow you to move the folder to other more accessible directories on your operating system. The most important thing is to have that folder located to be able to restore the contents later on.
How to restore the backup
When it comes to restoring GBWhatsApp’s backup in the same app, whether on the same or a different phone, locate the GBWhatsApp folder we copied previously. Install the MOD but don’t open it. We first need to copy the backup folder to our phone’s internal storage. How? That will depend on where you stored the backup.
If you saved it on a PC, the easiest thing to do is connect the device to the computer in question by means of the typical cable and copy the backup to any accessible folder, such as Downloads, for instance.

Now use ES File Explorer once again to move that folder from Downloads to the internal storage. Open the app and access the internal storage.

Now locate the Downloads folder where we previously pasted the MOD’s backup.

You should be able to see the backup, a folder called GBWhatsApp. Keep the folder pressed for a few seconds and you’ll see an option called Copy appear at the bottom of the interface. Select the backup’s folder and press this option.

Now go back to the previous folder (the local or root directory) and paste that folder there together with the rest of apps installed on your phone.

Having done all the previous, open GBWhatsApp. Don’t use the first option to restore your contacts. In the number verification window, neither should you choose the option to copy the data. Simply verify your number. The app will request permission to access your contacts and search for backups on Google Drive. That’s pointless as our backup isn’t on Google Drive and the MOD can’t even access the cloud storage space to look for it.
Here the app will warn you that there’s a backup available, precisely the one we copied previously to the internal memory. Accept to restore that copy by pressing Restore.

Depending on the size of the backup, the process can take more or less time, be patient in the meanwhile.

You’ll finally be notified that the backup has been restored successfully with the date on which the backup was created and the total number of messages recovered. Press Next and you’ll have GBWhatsApp ready with all your chats.

How to back up GBWhatsApp and restore it in WhatsApp Messenger
The procedure is very similar if you want to create a backup in GBWhatsApp and restore it in the official WhatsApp Messenger, although there some slight differences. In the first place, create a backup of your chats on GBWhatsApp. Open the app, drop down the options menu and select Settings at the bottom of the list.

Press the green Back up button to generate a backup on the internal storage of your phone.

Now use a file explorer and locate the GBWhatsApp folder on your phone’s internal storage. We recommend you to use ES File Explorer.
Open the app and access the internal storage of the device you’re using.

Locate the GBWhatsApp folder, press it and keep it pressed for a few seconds. A window will open just below with different options, choose Rename.

Change the name of the folder from GBWhatsApp to WhatsApp and press OK. Be careful! You have to do this in the root folder but also in all the internal folders. Browse through all the directories inside this folder, removing the “GB” prefix from them all using the same method.

Once you’ve completed all the previous steps, you can download and install WhatsApp Messenger. Once you open the app, after verifying the number and allowing the app to access your contacts to search for a non-existent backup on Google Drive, a window saying that a backup has been found will pop up. Press Restore.

Your backup will soon be imported, you can see the exact date on which it was created and the number of messages restored, and you’ll only have to press next to complete the configuration of your profile and have WhatsApp Messenger working will all your conversations.

How to backup WhatsApp Messenger and restore it in GBWhatsApp
To make a backup in WhatsApp Messenger and later restore it in GBWhatsApp, the procedure is the other way around. You have to create a backup of your chats in WhatsApp Messenger. As always, you have to press son the icon in the top right corner and access Settings.

Finally, hit the Back Up button.

Use your favorite file explorer to find the WhatsApp folder in your internal storage. We recommend you to use ES File Explorer.

Locate the WhatsApp folder and keep it pressed for a few seconds until the lower menu appears with the Rename option.

Rename the WhatsApp folder to GBWhatsApp Repeat this renaming procedure with any other subfolder inside the main folder doing exactly the same operation.

Once you’ve completed the previous steps, download and install GBWhatsApp. When you open the app for the first time, you’ll see a red button to restore backups, don’t use it. Later, during the number verification, there’s another button to copy restored data, don’t use it either. Simply verify your number, accept the permissions to access your contact list and then a new window will pop up saying that a backup has been found with its date and size. Press Restore and that’s it.

You’ll finally see how all your data is correctly imported, and you’ll only have to press Next to finish configuring your profile and continue your WhatsApp conversations where you last left them off, but now using GBWhatsApp with all its additional functions.
