How to make Haluski

The Best Haluski Recipe (3)

  • First, select SAUTE on the Instant Pot. When it reads HOT, add in the oil and onion and then saute until soft. This will take about 5 minutes.
  • Next, add the garlic, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Once they are combined, select CANCEL and use some of the water to deglaze the pot if needed. You want to make sure any stuck bits are removed from the bottom to avoid the burn notice.

  • Next, add the cabbage and the pasta and then pour the water over the noodles. The water won't cover the noodles which is fine. As a final step before placing the lid on top, add the butter over the pasta.
  • Once you add the butter, place the lid on the pressure cooker and then make sure the vent is set to the Sealing position. Next, select PRESSURE COOK on high pressure for 5 minutes.
  • When the timer goes off, carefully do a quick release of pressure. When the pin drops you can safely remove the lid.
  • Before serving, add the green peas and give it a quick stir. You can serve in bowls with sour cream or cottage cheese on top.

Pro Tips for making the best haluski

Haluski is really easy to make, but you should check out these tips and tricks to make sure it comes out right each time.

  • Don’t overcook the noodles. They only need 5 minutes of pressure cooking and the quick release. Too much more time and they can turn to mush!
  • Make sure you sauté the onions for a few minutes in the oil. This helps give them a great flavor.
  • If you really don’t like peas, you can omit them.
  • Make sure you scrape the bottom of the pot to remove any stuck on bits of food to avoid the burn notice on the Instant Pot.

How can I make traditional Haluski?

Traditionally Haluski is made with egg noodles. We are using fusilli pasta to make it kid friendly. If you are using egg noodles, adjust the cook time to 1 minute instead of 2 minutes.

How to serve Haluski?

Haluski makes a great main course. It is a very filling pasta recipe filled with lots of nutrients from the cabbage and onions.

We like to serve it with sour cream or cottage cheese on top.

You can also serve them with our homemade Ciabatta bread or garlic bread on the side. They allow you to scoop up some of the noodles and make excellent additions to the meal.

Though you can serve the noodles as a main dish, you could also serve it as a side or even as a breakfast food if you like.

How to store Haluski?

Once the noodles have cooled, you can spoon it into an airtight container. When it is ready, place the haluski in the fridge. You should be able to store for about 4 to 5 days.

When you are ready to serve the dish again, you can gently reheat it on the stove top in a pot over medium-low heat. As it heats, stir it so it heats evenly. If you prefer, you can place a small amount in an individual serving bowl and microwave until warmed through.

Can you freeze haluski?

Yes! You can place cooled haluski in a freezer safe container and then freeze for up to 3 months.

When you want to eat it, allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight. You can then reheat on the stove top over medium low heat or in the microwave until heated through.

Is Haluski vegan?

Our recipe uses butter, so it is not naturally vegan. It is a great vegetarian option though!

If you want to make it vegan, you can. Just substitute the butter with equal amounts of olive oil. Just note, the dish will lose a bit of its traditional flavor using all oil. You may want to consider using a vegan butter, which gives a bit more of a butter-like taste and texture.

Can I make this gluten free?

We tested the recipe using regular wheat noodles. You can try to use gluten free noodles, but you may need to adjust the cook times a bit since gluten free pasta tends to cook slightly differently than regular wheat pasta.
