Before you begin

There are a few things to understand before you move your data file:

  • If you want to move your file to a different version of Quicken, (such asWindows to Mac or Mac to Windows) you'll need to convert the file.For steps to convert,click here
  • You don't need to buy another copy of Quicken to move your data file, but the same version of Quicken should be installed on the computer you're moving your data file to:

  • We recommend to avoid moving Quicken data files often. If a data file needs to be viewed on different computers regularly, we suggest using Quicken on the Web instead. Subscription Release users can access Quicken on the Web on any computer to review accounts, without needing to install Quicken on additional computers or move data files.

Moving a file once

Step 1: Install Quicken on your new computer

  1. Install Quicken on the new computer.
  2. Make sure Quicken is on the latest release;Quicken should updatewhen you install, but if you need help with this step, clickhere.

Step 2: Put a copy of your Quicken file on an external disk

  1. On your oldcomputer, open Quicken and selectFile > Copy or Backup File.
  2. Backupyour data file to an external drive or disc, such as a USB drive, that you can use to move this backup to your new computer.

Step 3: Restore your Quicken file on the new computer

  1. Connect the external drive or disc tothe new computer.
  2. Open the external drive or disc. To locate the external drive,right-click the Start menu and select File Explorer.
  3. Drag your Quicken file from the external drive or disc to your new computer's desktop.
  4. Open Quickenand select theFile>Restore a Backup File. Navigate to your desktop and select your Quicken backuptorestorethe data file.
  5. ClickOK.
